Social media for your business: why short-form video works, and how to start

You know your business needs to be more visible online. You see competitors growing on Instagram and TikTok. But how do you tackle it when you lack the time, know-how or gear? In this article we explain why short videos are the best way to promote your business today, and how to get started.

What is short-form content?

Short-form content means short, vertical videos from a few seconds up to about a minute. You know them as Instagram Reels, TikToks and YouTube Shorts. They are becoming increasingly important on LinkedIn and Facebook too.

The big difference with a classic company video: short-form content doesn’t feel like advertising. It’s fast, personal and made to be watched on a phone. Exactly where your customers scroll every day.

Why short videos work for SMEs

Platforms like Instagram and TikTok don’t only show videos to your followers. They also show them to people who don’t know you yet, based on what they find interesting. That means even a small business without a big ad budget can reach lots of new people.

But the most important thing is trust. People prefer to buy from a business they know. Anyone who sees your business, your people and the way you work every week gets to know you a little before they walk in. That’s why we say: BELG doesn’t just sell videos, BELG sells trust.

In one case, monthly impressions rose from 38,657 to 251,550 in a year, thanks to a consistent short-form strategy.

Show what customers normally never see

The best videos show what usually stays hidden. At a butcher’s, customers only see the counter. What really fascinates people is what happens before: the craftsmanship, the early hours, the people behind the product.

That goes for every sector:

  • Garage or car dealer: a car rolling in, the inspection, the detailing and the key handover.
  • Hospitality: the kitchen before service, the chef at work, the fresh produce.
  • Craft and retail: how a product is made, step by step.
  • Services: the people and expertise behind your service.

What feels everyday to you is often the most interesting thing there is for your customers.

How to start with short-form video

  1. Choose your platforms. Start where your customers are. For many SMEs that’s Instagram, for a younger audience TikTok, for B2B LinkedIn.
  2. Be consistent. Post strong videos every week and keep it up. That regularity works wonders.
  3. Grab attention straight away. The first seconds decide whether someone keeps watching. Start with movement, a question or the end result.
  4. Add subtitles. Many people scroll without sound. With subtitles your message still lands.
  5. Show people. Faces and real colleagues create recognition and trust.
  6. Look at your numbers. Check every month what worked and adjust.

Do it yourself or outsource it?

You can make videos yourself, but it takes time, gear and experience with filming, editing and colour grading. Many business owners start enthusiastically and drop off as soon as it gets busy. That’s exactly where the difference lies: consistency.

At BELG we take the whole process off your hands. We visit you, find the stories behind your business, film everything in one shoot day and deliver finished videos every month. You have one fixed point of contact and a fixed price.
