Anyone looking for a plumber, a tree surgeon or a videographer types it into Google and clicks one of the first results. If you’re not there, the customer picks someone else. SEO, search engine optimisation, makes sure your website gets found. And for a local SME, that’s often simpler than you think.
What is SEO?
SEO is everything you do to rank higher in Google’s regular search results, without paying per click. Google wants to give its users the best answer. So your website has to show clearly what you do, where you do it and why you can be trusted.
1. Know what your customers search for
Your customer doesn’t search for your company name, but for what they need: "tree pruning Ghent", "website design" or "accountant East Flanders". Write those search terms down and give every important service its own page. Later, Google Search Console shows exactly which searches you are already found for.
2. Titles and descriptions that fit
- Page title: the blue title in Google. Put the main search term first and end with your company name.
- Description: the short text below it. It decides whether someone clicks.
- One main heading per page: it says in one sentence what the page is about.
3. A fast, technically sound website
Google measures how fast your website loads and how well it works on mobile. A sitemap, a secure connection (https), clear links between your pages and structured data also help: extra information that tells Google who you are, where you are and what you offer. Visitors don’t see it, but Google does.
4. Getting found locally
- Google Business Profile: free, and often the first thing people see when they search locally. Fill it in completely, with photos, services and opening hours.
- Reviews: ask happy customers for a review. They help you rank higher and convince new customers.
- Your region on your website: state clearly which cities and regions you work in.
5. New content on a regular basis
A blog with answers to questions customers really ask shows Google that your website is alive and that you know what you’re talking about. One good article a month already makes a difference. And every question your customers ask is a potential blog article.
6. Links from other websites
A link from another trustworthy website is a recommendation in Google’s eyes. Think of partners, suppliers, a local association or an article in the regional press.
A new website without losing your rankings
Do you already have a website that ranks well and want to switch? Then care is needed. Every existing page must stay at the same address or redirect neatly to the new page. Titles and copy that rank well come along. That way you keep your Google rankings and benefit straight away from a faster website.
How long does it take?
SEO isn’t a switch you flip. A new page usually appears in Google within a few days, but ranking high for competitive searches often takes a few months. Start today and you’ll reap the benefits in a few months, every day again, without paying per click.
